Abacavir Sulfate

Abacavir sulfate is a nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It works by blocking the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing the virus from replicating. Before starting treatment, patients must be screened for the HLA-B*5701 genetic allele, as those carrying this marker are at high risk for a severe and potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction.
